20 EMPTY LOTS, 6 KM OF FENCES AND A BIT OF FEAR Italy, 2002
20 terreni, 6km di stecatti e un po' di paura it is a work resulting from a research I developed within UNIDEE at Fondazione Pistoletto. I was interested in the south area of Biella (Piemonte), a middle town that expanded exponentially during the 50's. The growth of the town received media and administration attention, who invested efforts in communicating to its inhabitants how the future urbanization of the south area would be. I dived into this archival information, to find out that the pearl of the project, the Centro Civico was never built. Instead at its place there is a big shopping mall. Around the mall I identified 20 empty lots, which Biella's inhabitants have transformed into gardens, shortcuts, soccer courts, etc. I contrasted this information with the archival material, and with the current town-planning route-map. The research was shaped as a game board, which was proposed to the town as a participatory tool to engage citizens in the town-planning process.
